The results of the Swedish General Election a few years ago caused much controversy. The Social Democrats, Conservative, and Green Party fared as expected, but some of the other voting results caused uproar amongst politicians in the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament).

For some peculiar reason, nearly 13,000 people cast their vote to Donald Duck, which is nearly enough votes to win a seat in the Riksdag. Other strange results included Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) with 14,000 votes, Mick Jagger (also Rolling Stones) with 500, Bill Gates with 250, and the Pope with 100 votes. Flagging well behind was the "Queen of Pop" herself, Madonna, with 1 vote!

Summary

I decided to stay with Sweden a while longer, as this UL really is too good to pass by. Although claimed by many to be true (including reputable websites), the simple truth is that Donald Duck did not receive 13,000 votes. Sofia Knap of the Election Authority in Sweden also informed me that even if he had, it would not have been enough to gain a seat in the Riksdag. Although these details are not correct, there is a political party in Sweden called the "Donald-Duck-Party".

This UL is widely believed because the Swedish voters used to have the right to freely erase or add names of their choice on the voting slip. The voting system has since been revised, and the voters no longer have these rights.

I would like to know why Keith Richards is claimed to have got a staggering 13,500 more votes than fellow band member Mick Jagger, and Madonna must be disappointed with her result!

Final Thoughts

Why Donald Duck? In one source of information, I read that over the Christmas period, the Swedes traditionally watch Donald Duck cartoons on TV. It is as traditional for them as the Queen's speech and eating mince pies is to us.

Perhaps somebody should inform the Swedes that Donald Duck is just a character from a CARTOON, and he is NOT REAL. Mind you, I can see the attraction of Donald Duck over most politicians!
