NAME.....Stand Off At Sea
CODE.....CM1604
ORIGIN...Unknown
STATUS...False

Two radio operators, one of them aboard a U.S. Navy ship, had the following exchange:

Radio 1: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.

Radio 2: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees.

Radio 1: This is the captain of a U.S. Navy ship. I say again, divert your course.

Radio 2: No, I say again, divert YOUR course.

Radio 1: This is an aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy. This is a large warship. Divert your course now!

Radio 2: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

Summary

This UL, although false, is a story that the US Navy undoubtedly would like to shake off. This embarrassing tale was supposedly recorded by the Chief Of Navel Operations in 1995, although the UL has been around for at least twenty years. The operator in the warship, with his arrogant, pompous and self-righteous attitude, is pleasingly outwitted by the 'matter of fact', deadpan wit of the lighthouse operator.

Final Thoughts

Although this UL is documented as being about twenty years old, many researchers believe it goes back a lot further than that. Copies of this story are believed to have been passed around the US Navy in the 1960's as a joke.
